Q: What is The Travel Kids Club?
The Travel Kids Club is a membership club that sends children aged 6-11 an exciting package in the mail every month. In the packages are the adventures of Serena and Johnny who are travelling the world meeting inspiring people from all walks of life.
Through stories, pictures and activities, members build their confidence in their abilities to make a difference and discover how important their choices can be. They will experience excitement about the variety and wonders of the world and compassion for people from all walks of life and the situations they may find themselves in.
Q: What is included in each package?
Each package includes:
- A beautifully designed 30 page letter personalised for your child including illustrations, photos and art.
- A selection of activities including colouring pictures, drawing challenges, word games & crafty fun.
- A choice between two age appropriate charitable causes that they will support with their vote.
- Stickers related to the country of the month
- Competitions to win prizes
PLUS! Every 3 months there is a special issue with extras like interactive bedroom posters.
Q: How do you know that the content is age appropriate?
We have 2 layers of testing for each letter.
Firstly we work closely with an educator and primary school curriculum creator to oversee the content in every letter. She considers the appropriateness of the topics covered, the language used and whether it caters to different learning styles. She also helps us craft the questions to get kids thinking.
Once the letters are nearly ready we have primary school teachers in 3 countries read the letters to their classes. This way we get direct feedback on the responses of the kids.
The letters are designed to interest children aged 6 – 11.
If your child is aged 6 – 8 you can read through the content with them so that you can address the topics, read harder words together and answer any questions they may have.
The letters introduce certain topics like war, poverty, deforestation, pollution, extinction etc. We cover these topics lightly but if your child is very thoughtful, they may have a lot of questions. We are very interested in your feedback on these (or any) topics. So please let us know what conversations come up!
Q: My child’s package hasn’t arrived, what now?
The packages are posted on the 10th of each month from New Zealand, we aim to start them from February 2016. Please allow for 1 – 7 days for shipping to the Pacific and Asia and 5 – 14 days for shipping to the Americas, Africa and Europe.
If the package doesn’t arrive at all, please let us know and we will send another one. Please note that their personalised names will be handwritten (instead of printed) in any packages we resend.
Q: How do I change my membership plan?
Please send an email to us on the contact page and we will look after your needs.
Q: How do I add additional children to the package?
If you have more than one child, we can send additional activity packs for AUD$5 per child, per month. (This is about €3.3 or USD$3.5).
Your package will include:
- A single letter addressed to all of the children.
- One activity pack for each of the children.
Each activity pack will include things like colouring pictures, word games, drawing challenges, stickers and games. Some months this will include additional goodies like an interactive wall poster.
Q: Is this a religious thing?
No. We are completely non-sectarian and not affiliated with any religion or church. The only thing we want to convert your children to, is a life of confidence, adventure, compassion and fun.
Q: How do you get the information and stories?
We travel ourselves to these countries and for the most part, share our personal photos and experiences coupled with the information we get from the charities and organisations that we work with on each country. If we don’t have everything we need, we do a lot of research and interviews and we may use other peoples photos (with permission).
When we visit these countries we spend time getting to know local communities and filming inspiring documentaries for grown ups.
Q: How do you choose which charities to support?
We choose the charities based on a few criteria:
- The charity is vouched for. For the most part we have been there personally to see their work, or someone we trust has been there.
- The cause is appropriate to explain to children aged 6 – 11.
- The support will make a difference. We want to support for-good projects where the support will have an impact.
- They will provide feedback. It is important that we can keep all our members in the loop as to how their money is spent and to show the difference they have made.
Q: How do you maintain the privacy of the children you feature?
For children featured as charity stories – We do not use children’s real names in our letters. If we feature a child’s story it is with their parents permission through one of the charities we have worked with. We are very mindful of protecting the children we have worked with or are supporting.
For children featured as kid heroes – We will use their real names unless their parents request otherwise.
For members art and responses posted on the website – We will use the name on their response. If you wish to maintain anonymity, please ensure your child doesn’t write their surname on their entries. We will use initials for surnames unless you have a special request.
Q: What is your company structure?
We are in the process of setting up a Charitable Trust.
Once we have enough members to make this project viable, we will use the funds to pay for marketing, content creation and production costs. Any and all remaining funds will be used to a) offer sponsored memberships to disadvantaged children and schools in developing countries, b) to empower the disadvantaged communities we work with.
Initially $1 from each child’s membership goes to a project of their choice each month. We choose projects that have touched our hearts and that would make good examples for our members to learn from.
As our membership grows, our costs will reduce and we will be able to increase the amount we give.
Q: How else can I contribute?
You can contribute in many ways!

- Share our project with other parents.
- Make a donation.
- Volunteer your skills: we currently are looking for a lawyer & a charitable trust tax advisor in New Zealand.
